Air Gas Flow Meter Calibration: NIST Traceable Verification Master Loops

Quick Answer: Silver Automation Instruments calibrates air and gas flow meters with NIST traceable verification master loops. Standard coverage is 0.1 to 1000 Nm3/h for air, nitrogen, CO2, biogas, and hydrogen blends up to 10 percent hydrogen. Send us your gas type, pressure, temperature, pipe size, and flow range for a fixed calibration quote.

Why NIST Traceable Calibration Matters for Air and Gas Flow Meters

Gas flow meters drift. Thermal mass sensors get coated. Vortex sensors pick up pipe vibration. Coriolis tubes suffer erosion in wet gas. NIST traceable calibration ties your meter reading to a documented measurement chain. The traceability chain ends at a national reference standard. Auditors and ISO 9001 systems accept a NIST traceable chain. We calibrate air and gas meters in our Nanjing lab and on customer sites.

We have seen a chemical plant in Vietnam reject a full export batch because the compressed air meter was off by 6 percent. The root cause was not a sensor defect. The root cause was a missing calibration record. A NIST traceable certificate fixes that problem.

What Is a Verification Master Loop for Air Gas Flow Meters

A verification master loop is a pipe loop with a calibrated reference meter. The master meter sits in series with the unit under test. Air or gas flows through both meters at the same time. We compare pulse output, 4-20 mA HART signal, or frequency output. The loop includes pressure sensors and PT100 temperature probes. We correct for temperature and pressure. The master meter itself holds a NIST or equivalent national traceability certificate.

For air we use a thermal mass reference meter from a European national metrology institute. For nitrogen and CO2 we switch to a Coriolis master meter. The loop covers 0.1 to 1000 Nm3/h. Pipe sizes range from DN15 to DN80. Larger DN100 and DN150 meters need a customer site audit.

Calibration Setup We Use at Silver Instruments

Our lab in Nanjing runs two master loops. Loop A handles compressed air from 2 bar to 10 bar. Loop B handles nitrogen, argon, and CO2 from 0.5 bar to 6 bar. We record temperature with PT100 probes at the inlet and outlet. Uncertainty for air is ±0.5 percent of reading. For gas mass flow the uncertainty is ±0.35 percent of reading. We issue a 3 point or 5 point certificate. You get raw data and not just a pass or fail result.

In practice, most engineers skip this part. They buy a meter and install it. Two years later the reading shifts. A calibration loop t

est costs less than a failed batch. We have seen this on customer sites in the Middle East and Latin America.

Meter Types We Calibrate and Supply

We calibrate thermal mass flow meters for compressed air and biogas. We calibrate vortex flow meters for steam and gas. We calibrate Coriolis mass flow meters for natural gas, hydrogen blends, and CO2. We also supply oval gear meters for diesel and fuel oil. Our calibration service covers Silver Instruments branded meters and third party meters.

A food and beverage plant in Thailand asked us to verify three DN50 thermal mass meters. They measured dryer air in a spray drying line. We found one meter had a zero shift of 2.1 percent. After recalibration the meter returned to the original curve. The plant saved a full production stop.

For ATEX Zone 1 sites we supply approved gas flow meters and calibration adapters. For water and wastewater projects we also supply electromagnetic flow meters with conductivity from 5 µS/cm. Liquid viscosity for oval gear meters ranges from 1 cP to 1000 cP.

Air Gas Flow Meter Calibration FAQ

What gas types can you calibrate? Air, nitrogen, argon, CO2, natural gas, biogas, and hydrogen blends up to 10 percent hydrogen. For aggressive gases we need material compatibility data from your process team.

Do you offer on site calibration? Yes for DN100 and larger meters or when the process cannot stop. We send a portable master loop. Travel costs apply for Southeast Asia, Latin America, Middle East, and Africa.

What certificates do you provide? NIST traceable or equivalent ISO 17025 recognized certificates. Each certificate lists reference meter serial number, uncertainty, test points, and environmental conditions.

How long does calibration take? Standard lab calibration takes 5 to 7 working days after we receive the meter. Express service takes 3 working days for a 30 percent surcharge.

What information do you need for a quote? Gas type, flow range, pipe size, pressure, temperature, output signal, and meter model. Send us these values and we reply within 24 hours.

Request a Calibration Quote

Send us your pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, gas type, and flow range in kg/h or Nm3/h. Tell us the meter brand and model. We will return a fixed price for NIST traceable calibration and a lead time.
