Ultrasound Gas Flow Meter: Custody Transfer Controls for High-Volume Pipelines

Quick Answer

Ultrasonic gas flow meters deliver 0.5% to 1.0% accuracy for custody transfer in high-volume pipelines without causing pressure drop. They handle pipe sizes from DN100 up to DN1200 and larger. For fiscal metering, you need multi-path designs with 4 to 6 transducer pairs to meet AGA-9 or ISO 17089 standards.

Custody Transfer Is a Business Transaction, Not Just a Measurement

When natural gas crosses a border station between Malaysia and Thailand, the meter reading determines real money changing hands. A 0.5% error on a DN600 pipeline flowing at 15 m/s can mean hundreds of thousands of dollars difference per month. This is why custody transfer metering has its own rulebook. The meter is not just an instrument. It is the cash register.

Silver Automation Instruments supplies ultrasonic gas flow meters built specifically for fiscal metering on large-diameter pipelines. We have shipped these to pipeline operators in Nigeria, Oman, and Indonesia. The requirements are always the same. High accuracy. Zero drift over time. Diagnostics that prove the meter is still working correctly between calibration intervals.

Multi-Path Design Matters More Than You Think

A single-path ultrasonic meter is fine for process control. For custody transfer, you need at least 4 paths. Most engineers specify 6 paths on pipelines above DN400. Each transducer pair measures velocity along a chord. The flow computer integrates these chordal measurements into a volumetric flow rate.

Here is the thing about flow profiles. No real pipeline has perfectly developed flow. Elbows, reducers, and partially open valves create swirl and asymmetry. A 4-path meter with chord positions optimized for Gaussian quadrature rejects about 90% of the distortion. A 6-path meter pushes that closer to 98%. We have seen this on customer sites in Vietnam where space constraints forced short straight runs. The 6-path meter still met the 0.5% uncertainty budget. The single-path meter from another supplier drifted by 2% on the same installation.

Silver Instruments ultrasonic gas meters use titanium-housed transducers rated for 0 to 60 bar and gas temperatures from -40°C to +120°C. The signal processing runs at 200 kHz sampling. This lets the electronics track the ultrasonic pulse precisely, even with wet gas or small amounts of glycol carryover.

Straight-Run Requirements and Installation Reality

AGA-9 calls for 10D upstream and 5D downstream straight pipe for multi-path meters with no flow conditioner. In practice, most pipeline stations cannot give you that. A gas receiving station near Lagos had a DN500 meter sitting 4D downstream of a double elbow out of the ground. That is an ugly flow profile.

The fix was a combination of a perforated plate flow conditioner and a 5-path chordal arrangement. With the flow conditioner installed 2D upstream of the meter body, the velocity profile flattened enough for the 5-path integration to work. The meter passed the site acceptance test with a 0.35% deviation from the reference prover.

Pressure and Temperature Compensation Are Non-Negotiable

An ultrasonic meter measures actual volumetric flow at line conditions. Custody transfer billing uses standard volume at 15°C and 1.01325 bar. Or 20°C and 1 bar depending on your contract. The conversion needs live pressure and temperature inputs.

Silver Instruments packages the ultrasonic meter with a PT100 RTD and a 4-20 mA HART pressure transmitter as one calibrated assembly. The flow computer handles the compressibility calculation using AGA-8 Gros
