Aeration Flow Meter: Monitoring Dissolved Oxygen and Air Injection Lines
Quick Answer
For aeration air and oxygen injection lines a thermal mass flow meter is the first choice. It measures gas mass flow directly in Nm3/h or kg/h and sends 4-20 mA HART to the dissolved oxygen control loop. For a fast quotation send us pipe size DN, gas type, flow range, pressure bar and temperature °C.
Why Aeration Air Flow Measurement Matters
Aeration basins in municipal and industrial plants use blowers and air injection lines. Operators need a reliable air flow signal for dissolved oxygen control. Many plants run blowers at fixed speed. That wastes energy. In practice aeration can take 40 to 70 percent of a wastewater plant energy bill. We have seen this in food and beverage sites in Vietnam and textile wastewater plants in Bangladesh. A flow meter on each air line shows how much air reaches each basin. Without that signal you do not know which diffuser is blocked or which lateral leaks.
Air pressure and temperature change through the day. A volumetric meter can drift with gas density. A thermal mass flow meter measures gas mass directly. The probe has two PT100 sensors. One sensor is heated and the other is unheated. The temperature difference relates to mass velocity. For aeration air this gives a stable Nm3/h or kg/h output.
Dissolved Oxygen Control Needs a Fast Air Signal
DO sensors in a basin send a signal to a blower VFD or control valve. But DO is a slow process variable. Air flow changes in seconds. Aeration flow meters close the control loop faster. For example a paper mill in Indonesia had a DO loop swinging between 0.8 and 3.2 mg/L. The cause was a differential pressure device with impulse lines that plugged with moisture. After replacing it with a Silver Instruments thermal mass flow meter the DO value stabilized at 1.5 mg/L within one day. The same meter now drives automatic valve trim on two aeration lanes.
Recommended Meter for Air Injection Lines
Silver Instruments supplies an insertion thermal mass flow meter for compressed air, aeration air, oxygen and mixed gas lines. The standard probe is 316L stainless steel. It installs through a 1 inch or 1.5 inch ball valve. The flow element fits pipe sizes from DN50 to DN300 and larger. Electronics output 4-20 mA HART, RS485 Modbus and a local display. Accuracy is about 1.5 percent of reading plus 0.5 percent of full scale for air. Turndown is 100:1. That helps when aeration lines run low at night and high during the day.
For small pilot lines an inline thermal mass meter works from DN15. Pressure rating is 16 bar at 25 °C and 10 bar at 100 °C. Temperature range is -20 to 150 °C for standard electronics. For oxygen service the wetted parts are cleaned and oil free. Hazardous area versions are available for ATEX Zone 1.
Installation and Sizing Details
Most engineers skip this part. The insertion depth matters. For pipes DN50

Real Site Notes from Southeast Asia and the Middle East
A shrimp farm in Thailand uses aeration flow meters on six pond air headers. Paddle wheel meters failed because of moisture and salt spray. The thermal mass meters lasted through a wet season. A municipal wastewater plant in the Philippines uses one insertion probe on a DN300 blower discharge line. The operator compares daily air totalizer data with blower power consumption. A desalination plant in the Middle East measures 40 to 400 Nm3/h at 3 bar for dissolved air flotation units. The HART output lets technicians read flow and diagnostic values without opening the panel.
Data You Need for a Quote
Send us pipe size DN, gas type air oxygen or mixed gas, flow range in Nm3/h or kg/h, pressure bar, temperature °C and signal preference. For aeration air service most customers specify 4-20 mA HART. For hazardous oxygen or biogas systems tell us if ATEX Zone 1 or IECEx is required.

Frequently Asked Questions
Question: Can I use an electromagnetic flow meter on air injection lines?
Answer: No. Electromagnetic flow meters require a conductive liquid. They work for wastewater and sludge with conductivity above 5 µS/cm and viscosity up to around 100 cP. They cannot measure air or oxygen because these are gases.
Question: What signal is best for dissolved oxygen control?
Answer: 4-20 mA HART is the most common output. It connects directly to a DO analyzer or PLC. HART also gives flow, temperature and totalizer data without a separate HMI.
Question: What is the minimum pipe size for an insertion thermal mass flow meter?
Answer: DN50 is typical. For smaller lines from DN15 an inline thermal mass flow meter or a small bore vortex meter can work.
Question: Can the meter handle blower pulsation?
Answer: Yes. Thermal mass meters have a slow thermal response. They naturally dampen pulsation from positive displacement blowers. Do not use a differential pressure device on pulsating lines.
Question: How is the air flow meter calibrated?
Answer: The factory calibrates against a traceable air flow standard. For oxygen or mixed gas order a gas-specific calibration. Recalibration every 24 months is a common maintenance cycle.
